Breakfast was a muted affair. Drake had turned the TV off to avoid getting too many prompts for Family Man questions from Eva, and he didn’t want to get more pissed off than he already was. He’d seen the reporters had been badgering Mrs Jenkins at her home that morning, too, and the footage showed them harassing her while she walked to her car.

The car she was still driving. He smiled at the memory of her telling him proudly about it.

She’d been good enough to bat them away, but soon she’d have to give them something so they’d leave her alone. In the meantime, her face was full of fury and she’d told them where to stick it in her blunt Yorkshire way.

Damn press. Sooner we catch that prick, the better.

‘John, will you be able to give Eva a lift to school this morning?’ Becca asked, looking intently at her work phone at the table.

Eva looked up with expectant eyes.

‘I’m sorry, love… kiddo… I can’t. I’ve got a few interviews to carry out,’ he said. He could feel the mood in the room drop straight after the words left his mouth. He turned to Eva. ‘But I could see about grabbing you later on. How about that?’

Becca didn’t join in the conversation, continuing to do whatever she was doing on her phone.

‘Sure, that’s nice that you’ve made a new friend,’ Drake said. ‘She’s new too, isn’t she? To the area, I mean – that’s good of you to make her feel welcome.’

‘Yeah, she’s fun. She’s a bit different from my other friends, and I like it,’ Eva said through a mouthful of cereal. ‘Though her mum’s a little strange. I think she might have some kind of… mental health issues or something.’

‘Oh? Like what?’ Drake frowned, not liking the idea of having his daughter with someone who may be mentally unstable. Then he immediately felt guilty about being so judgemental.

‘Dad! Don’t give me that look – she’s just a bit forgetful and spaced out, from what I’ve seen,’ Eva said, rolling her eyes at him while she polished off the last of her cereal.

‘Okay, well, text me the address and a time later. I’ll see what I can do. May want to check this woman out for myself. Or maybe your mother might have to, if something comes up.’

She winked at him. ‘Okey dokey.’

Becca gave him a thumbs up and a grunt of confirmation, seemingly still intent on her work phone. Drake wasn’t sure if she was giving him the silent
